Lathyrus latifolius (G)A sound herbaceous perennial which will climb to 5 or 6 feet each year, it can also be allowed to sprawl, or to tumble down an embankment. A native of Europe, the everlasting pea or perennial sweet pea was introduced into cultivation in 1596 and is now naturalized in many areas. Useful for filling gaps in the border left by early flowering plants and spring bulbs. In addition to the varieties illustrated, the seed supplied also produces a very attractive light pink form. The common name is the perennial pea but it is often refered to as the everlasting pea, a name which properly belongs to Lathyrus grandiflorus. Virtually evergreen in warm climates.
