Lathyrus species

The true sweet pea, Lathyrus odoratus, is an annual which has to be grown from seed each year. The following two species, however, Lathyrus nervosus and Lathyrus latifolius, are sound perennials and make excellent garden plants. Although flower may be obtained in the first year from an early sowing, it may be better to sow between March and June to give strong plants which will provide a good display the following year.
Please note that the Everlasting Pea, Lathyrus grandiflorus does not normally set seed, and must be purchased as a plant from a nursery or garden centre.

Lathyrus latifolius

A rambling herbaceous climber which can reach 5 to 6 feet, this perennial sweet pea can be allowed to sprawl over early flowering plants whose display is finished. The racemes of 12 flowers open all at once, which makes it an excellent cut flower. We offer a mixture of superior forms with white, light pink or magenta pink flowers. Not scented, but a long flowering season. The perennial sweet pea is easy to cultivate and provides a reliable display of its sweet pea like flowers every year.

Lathyrus nervosus

Lord Anson's Blue Pea.We offer the true species with leathery blue-green leaves and racemes of clear blue flowers produced over a long period during the summer. More of a sprawler than a climber. Rare and very desirable. We have limited stock of the seed which is offered in packets of 10 seeds for £3-00 . We find that the small seeds of Lathyrus nervosus germinate better if nicked or soaked for 24 hours immediately prior to sowing. Click on the image for more cultural details.
